What to Write in a Love, Friendship, or Wedding Card (and a tip for letter writing blocks)

· letter writing · what to say

Sometimes the words don't come easily.

Have you ever picked up a card, get ready to write and then you don't know what in the world to even put down into words?

This is so common, and it happens to me so often.

Not every card is easy to write, and sometimes that can make the act of sending a card super daunting.

My biggest tip (and something I tell myself every time I hit a writing block) is actually quite simple: Don't overcomplicate it. Write what first comes to mind.

It really is that simple. Oftentimes we get so caught up in saying the "right thing," when what makes letter writing so beautiful is its genuine, thoughtful connection.

If you worry about a messy card, embrace the mess or start on another piece of paper.

Think about why you're writing to them and go from there. What made you think of them?

Since we're heading into the season of love, here are a few starters to help you write cards and letters (lots of cheese ahead).

What to write in a love card:

  • Include a physical picture of a favorite moment together.
  • The reality of our life together is better than how I could have ever imagined it.
  • I was never a fan of this holiday until meeting you.
  • You are the love of my life—always have been, always will be.

What to write in a friendship card:

  • You're one of the kindest people I've ever been lucky to know.
  • You're my favorite person.
  • I'd walk through fire for you. Wellll maybe not fire, because that's quite dangerous. But maybe a sauna...if it's not too humid (my hair, of course).
  • What is a moment that you cherish with this person?

What to write in a wedding card:

  • You two are relationship goals. Congratulations, newlyweds!
  • You weirdos were made for each other.
  • The love you two share is so beautiful. May it grow lovely every day of your marriage.
