Sometimes it’s hard to find the right words for a sympathy card.
An empty, unwritten card can feel a bit daunting and intimidating, and then you add in that losing someone is the most heartwrenching, life tearing and, terrible moment in life. So much pressure to be perfect and say the “right thing.”
But is that really true?
The last thing someone cares about when receiving a card during these moments is if you said the right thing or if there are scribbled-out parts on the card.
Speak from the heart.
Just hearing from you and that you care is what matters most.
Starting from scratch can be a bit tough though, no matter the circumstances, so here are a few messages to help get you started:
- Thinking of you with sympathy — and here for you with loving support.
- Celebrating an amazing life and wishing you comfort in your memories.
- Wishing you feelings of comfort, moments of peace, and memories of joy during this difficult time.
Some things you can add to the card:
- A personal story or favorite memory of the person who has passed is always treasured.
- Including a photograph adds a unique and special personal touch.
- “May you take comfort in knowing there is one more angel above us.” —Unknown
An extra tip: Make sure to be sensitive to the person’s spirituality and/or religion. If you don't know it, it is best to leave religion out.
A super extra tip: It’s always best (and proper etiquette) to send a card as soon as you hear, but know that any timing at all is so appreciated.
At the end of the day, speaking from your heart - no matter the fumbling or crossing out of words - is what matters most. Be their light in the darkest moments of life.
